The Rise of a Relentless Force
Born in 1917 in Kumamoto, Japan, Kimura began training in judo at the age of nine. By 16, he had already earned his 4th dan black belt — an achievement that, to this day, seems nearly superhuman. His training methods were nothing short of brutal: 1,000 push-ups a day, countless hours of randori, and a relentless pursuit of perfection. Kimura didn’t just train to win; he trained to dominate.

By the time he was 30, he had amassed over 400 victories, rarely if ever tasting defeat. But one match in 1951 would define his legacy not just in judo, but across all grappling arts.

Commencing his BJJ journey at the age of 10 under the Monteiro brothers—Guto, Binho, Yano, and Lucio—Ribeiro quickly distinguished himself, reportedly losing only twice in his first seven years of competition .
Ribeiro's competitive accolades are extensive. He is a five-time IBJJF World Champion in the heavyweight division (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2015) and a two-time absolute division champion . His prowess extends to the ADCC World Championships, where he secured gold medals in 2007 and 2009 . Notably, over a 30-year competitive career, his guard was passed only four times, underscoring his defensive excellence .

Beyond competition, Ribeiro has significantly influenced BJJ's growth.
